6 steps to installing Solar PV​

Complete the call back form and our team will contact you to confirm your details, check grant eligibility and arrange a free consultation at a time that suits you.

2. Free consultation ​

Speak with a solar expert who’ll assess your energy needs, recommend the right solar PV system, and complete a virtual survey.

3. Installation date ​

Pay a 50% deposit to secure an installation date. Pay the balance on the day of installation.

4. Installation day

Most installations finish in a day with minimal disruption. Your installer will set up your system and show you how to monitor it in the app.

5. Final check-up ​

Our team will follow up by phone or email to ensure everything’s working, answer your questions, and help complete your BER assessment.

Solar PV panels FAQs

Solar PV, also called Photovoltaic, uses the sun's energy to convert daylight into renewable energy. The electricity is then consumed within the home, reducing your need to buy energy from a supplier. When a Solar PV system produces more energy than a home needs, the extra energy can go to your immersion heater. Solar PV is not to be confused with Solar Thermal - while Solar Thermal heats water only, Solar PV gives you free electricity and hot water. Watch our promotional video here for even more information.

The installation of solar panels on domestic properties is exempt from planning permission. Since the 7th of October 2022, there is no longer a limit to the area of solar panels which can be installed on rooftops of homes, anywhere in the country.

Some roofs aren’t suitable for solar PV due to factors like certain tile types or asbestos. This is usually identified during the survey, but occasionally only when installation begins. If we’re unable to complete the installation for technical reasons, your deposit will be refunded in full.​

A good quality broadband connection is necessary to monitor how much power your home is using. Once installed the homeowner can review both the live and cumulative energy usage in the home on the free energy app from their smartphone.

It is typical for data in an inverter app to be slightly delayed. Most inverters don’t stream data continuously. Instead, they collect data internally and send it to the cloud every few minutes. The app then updates when the cloud receives it. This reduces network traffic, power consumption and wear on the inverter’s communication hardware.​

Solar Battery FAQs

The battery stores the unused generated electricity from your solar PV array for use later in the day. This ensures that you use practically all the power your PV has generated. The battery can also be set to charge on cheaper night rate electricity which can then be used during the day for further savings.

The battery storage system is installed together with your solar PV purchase or can be added to an existing solar PV system. Our team can advise you on your options.

We offer 5.1 kWh, 7.2kWh, 10kWh and 15kWh Dyness batteries for residential use.

Yes, as well as supplying and installing a battery as an optional extra with our solar PV installations Electric Ireland can supply and install a battery to homeowners who have existing solar PV installed in their homes.​

Battery capacity is usually shown in two ways- total (nominal) capacity which is the full amount of energy the battery can hold and usable capacity, the amount you can use. A small portion is kept in reserve (a buffer) to protect the battery and help it last longer. Most manufacturers display the total capacity.​

Yes, the Dyness battery relies on an internet connection to provide the system monitoring. Broadband is necessary to remotely identify and fix system faults online, as well as provide regular, free software updates to ensure that the functionality of the system is up-to-date.

The free Dyness app provides an easy-to-use interface giving you the ability to monitor and manage your energy usage and generation 24/7. The Dyness app is available to download in iOS or Android stores – just search for “Dyness”.

Due to grid safety requirements the battery will not operate in the event of a power cut. However a back up reserve unit is available as an optional extra.

Microgeneration FAQs​

Microgenerators generate clean, renewable energy to meet some or all of the electricity demands of a household or business.

The Government Microgeneration Support Scheme is now available so that those with a registered microgeneration device can sell any excess electricity back to Ireland’s electricity grid.

This will help households reduce their carbon footprint and save money.

Most Electric Ireland microgenerators have Solar PV installed on their roof. Your Solar PV installer would have registered an NC6 form on your behalf to ESB Networks. This form provides us with the information we need to set you up.

Electric Ireland is pleased to offer a rate of 19.5c per kWh. We estimate that this payment will range between €50-€300 per year, depending on the size and type of your microgeneration system (a typical installation of 10 panels would be about €150 per year).

Payment is made in the form of a credit on your electricity bill reflecting your microgeneration export in that period.

ESB Networks limits single-phase homes to a 5kVA maximum export. Your inverter will ‘clip’ anything more than this. However oversizing panels is typical and can help you reduce grid imports, produce more energy in low-light conditions, increase self-consumption and produce more energy to charge your battery.​
