Is a home battery right for you?

A HOME STORAGE BATTERY CAN BOOST YOUR ENERGY INDEPENDENCE AND HELP YOU SAVE MONEY.

If you're considering solar panels for your home, you’ve likely heard about storage batteries. But do you really need one? Let’s explore the benefits, costs, and considerations to help you decide.

What is a solar battery?

A solar battery stores excess electricity generated by your solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Instead of exporting unused energy to the grid, you can use it later, like at night or during power outages.

Where is the best place to install a battery?

Many of our customers install their batteries in garages for ease of access. This also makes it easier to add an emergency socket next to the battery that is easy to reach. Some customers install batteries in their attic if they have limited space, while other models can be installed outside. If you are planning on installing your battery outside, make sure it is rated IP65 or higher.

Energy independence: Using a battery during a power outage.

There are normally two options to use a battery during a power outage. The first is to use the emergency socket next to the battery. This allows you to plug-in household appliances and run them from the battery during a power outage if this occurs.

The other option is to get an automatic transfer switch (ATS), normally referred to as a solar panel changeover switch. This switch automatically changes the power source for the home from the grid to the battery during a power outage. It can be wired in a way so priority household appliances can run off the battery during a power outage. Additional work on the main fuse board is required to fit a changeover switch.

We recommend talking to your installer first about the best option for your home. Always choose an installer who follows Safe Electric guidelines for all aspects of your solar installation.

Lower your bills by smart charging

A benefit of having a battery is you can store solar energy during the day and use it during peak hours. This is a cheaper alternative than importing from the grid when electricity is more expensive. Combining this strategy with charging up your battery with cheaper night-time rates maximises your solar system.

If you do export surplus solar energy your panels, make most suppliers offer a microgeneration export credit. At Electric Ireland we offer 19.5 cent per kilowatt hour (c/kWh) for exported energy.

Cost considerations

Battery prices vary based on capacity. Electric Ireland offers modular batteries from 5kWh capacity upwards, starting at €1,500.

Modular batteries allow you to link smaller batteries together to create more storage as you need it. For instance, you could link three 5kWh batteries if you wanted approximately 15kWh of storage. The amount of energy you can use is usually a little less than the battery's stated capacity.

Batteries installed after the initial solar installation are often referred to as a retrofitted battery. A retrofitted battery can be more expensive as they are subject to an additional call out fee.

Installation options

  • New Installations: Batteries can be added during your solar PV setup.

  • Existing Systems: You can retrofit a battery if you have a hybrid inverter.

Recommendation

A storage battery isn’t essential, but it’s a smart upgrade. It boosts your energy independence and saves money. Whether you’re installing a new system or upgrading an existing one, talk to a solar expert. They will help you decide if a battery is right for your home.
