How one Cork couple is cutting energy costs and moving towards net zero
A PRACTICAL JOURNEY TO LOWER ENERGY BILLS AND A MORE SUSTAINABLE HOME
For David and Anne Moore from Midleton, Co. Cork, the journey to net zero has not been about making one big change. Instead, it has been about taking practical steps, one at a time, to create a more energy-efficient, sustainable home.
When they built their family home in 2012, they chose the best energy solutions available at the time, including high levels of insulation and triple-glazed windows. As technology evolved, so did their approach to energy efficiency.
Saving More with Solar PV Panels
In 2025, David and Anne installed 12 Solar PV Panels through Electric Ireland. With guidance on available SEAI grants and the long-term benefits of solar energy, the investment has already started paying off.
By generating their own renewable electricity and exporting excess energy back to the grid, the couple have seen significant reductions in their energy costs and have even been in credit on their electricity bills.
“Instead of being nervous when the bill arrives, I’m looking at it and smiling,” says David.
Solar PV Panels can help homeowners lower electricity bills, reduce carbon emissions and take greater control of their energy usage, making them a key step towards a more sustainable future.
EV Chargers
When the time came to replace their diesel car, David and Anne switched to an electric vehicle and had an EV Charger installed by Electric Ireland.
The installation was paired with expert advice on home charging, helping them maximise convenience and savings. By charging overnight, they can power their EV at a fraction of the daytime electricity cost.

Making the Most of your Smart Meter
To get even more value from their EV and home energy use, David chose Electric Ireland's Night Boost Smart Meter Tariff.
With lower electricity rates available during overnight hours, he can charge his EV while electricity is cheapest.
“I can get around 100km of driving from a couple of hours of overnight charging, costing just a fraction of what I used to spend on diesel.”
Smart Meter Tariffs help customers use energy when it's cheaper, making it easier to reduce household energy costs while supporting a more sustainable lifestyle.
Small Changes, Big Impact
For David and Anne, becoming more energy conscious has delivered both financial and environmental benefits. From Solar PV Panels and an EV Charger to a Smart Meter Tariff, each decision has helped them move closer to net zero while saving money along the way.
Their story shows that building a greener home doesn't happen overnight. With the right advice, practical solutions and expert support, every step can make a difference.
