Electric Ireland’s ‘GAA Minor Moments Podcast' Season Four Episode Six

John Allen from Cork

Electric Ireland, proud sponsor of the Electric Ireland GAA Minor Championships and the Electric Ireland Camogie Minor Championships, has today released Season Four, Episode Six of the ‘GAA Minor Moments’ podcast, featuring former Cork dual star John Allen.

This week, host Fergal O'Keeffe sits down with the GAA legend to explore his early sporting days juggling both hurling and football, his pivotal minor experiences, and the invaluable lessons he learned along the way.

Allen, a key figure in Cork GAA history, shares insights into his late start in football, his preference for hurling, and the unique pressures he placed upon himself with the small ball. He recounts the story of Aghabullogue, the club that brought the first All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship to Cork in 1890. He also fondly remembers his minor years, particularly the 1973 Munster Final victory over Kerry, a game that coincided with his 18th birthday and Jimmy Barry-Murphy's debut.

Allen also reflects on the importance of balance in a young athlete's life, advising aspiring underage players to cultivate diverse interests outside of sport and avoid placing all of their eggs in one basket. He emphasises the significance of mental preparation, drawing from his experiences with Tony Quinn and his own journey from player to influential manager. He discusses his management style, focusing on empowering players and fostering a sense of ownership within the team, drawing parallels to Declan Kidney's approach with Munster Rugby.

Throughout the episode, Allen offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of GAA, contrasting the training regimes of the past with the intense preparation of today's elite athletes. He also touches on the current state of Cork Hurling, expressing optimism for the future and highlighting the exceptional talent emerging at the underage level.

Electric Ireland’s ‘GAA Minor Moments’ Podcast will air on Tuesdays throughout the Electric Ireland Camogie & GAA Minor Championships as well-known Irish stars share memories from their early sporting careers, reflecting on the defining moments from playing Minor and how it shaped them, both on and off the pitch.

This season, Fergal will be joined by a host of excellent guests as they reflect on their time spent playing Minor and shed light on some great personal stories.
