Season Five Episode Six of "GAA Minor Moments" Podcast Featuring Christy O'Connor

SEASON FIVE EPSIDOE SIX OF THE 'GAA MINOR MOMETNS' PODCAST FEATURES LEGENDARY CLARE GOALKEEPER CHRISTY O'CONNOR.
Electric Ireland, proud sponsor of the Electric Ireland GAA Minor and Camogie Minor Championships, has today released Season Five, Episode Six of the ‘GAA Minor Moments’ podcast, featuring legendary Clare goalkeeper Christy O'Connor. This week, host Fergal O’Keeffe delves into the demanding world of a GAA goalkeeper, a position Christy O'Connor famously mastered. Fresh from witnessing the heroics of Clare’s Mark Sheedy in the Munster Under-20 Final, O'Connor offers profound insights into the unique mental fortitude and bravery required between the posts. He discusses how the role has evolved from his Minor years to today's game.
O'Connor vividly recounts his early passion for goalkeeping, inspired by "Roy of the Rovers" comics, and how his path was solidified after a failed outfield trial. He shares his experiences playing Minor in 1991, reflecting on a prevailing Clare mentality that, at the time, presented a challenge to fully convert talent into success. This era, he explains, lacked the established winning confidence now evident in today's young Clare teams, who have grown up witnessing All-Ireland victories.
Beyond the playing field, Christy O'Connor offers a compelling perspective on his post-playing career, including his role as goalkeeper coach for Dublin alongside Anthony Daly, a partnership that fostered invaluable road-trip conversations and mutual respect. He also details his journey as a forwards coach for Cork and his work on the acclaimed book “Last Man Standing”, which delved into the minds of legendary goalkeepers. Through these experiences, he highlights the modern player’s hunger for information and the evolving, highly tactical nature of the inter-county game.
For the 2026 generation of Minor players, O'Connor's advice is clear: embrace the journey, listen to coaches, and strive to be the best version of yourself, always showing respect and taking no shortcuts. Specifically for aspiring Minor goalkeepers, he stresses the paramount importance of mental bravery, meticulous homework, strong communication with defenders, and ensuring the young player truly wants to be in goal, rather than being placed there.
Electric Ireland’s ‘GAA Minor Moments’ podcast will air on Tuesdays throughout the Electric Ireland Camogie & GAA Minor Championships. Each week, well-known Irish stars share memories from their early sporting careers, reflecting on the defining moments from playing Minor and how it shaped them, both on and off the pitch.
In previous episodes this season, Fergal has been joined by Antrim's Enda McNulty, Cork’s Jamie Wall, and others, as they reflect on their memories playing Minor and beyond.
