Ireland’s leading five-star hotel, The Europe Hotel & Resort in Killarney, Co Kerry, is going green with 100% renewable energy, thanks to Electric Ireland.
The hotel part of the Killarney Hotels Ltd group, is committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 25% in 2020.
As part of this commitment to sustainability, The Europe had to consider the scale of the resort, which is situated on the lakes of Killarney, especially the energy consumption of facilities such as ESPA spa at The Europe.
The resort needed a solution that would allow it to maintain its highly regarded amenities for its guests, while upholding its responsibilities to the environment. Operating on 100% renewable electricity has enabled it to make a change that will have a direct positive impact.
This step is one of many changes The Europe has recently made. Some of the other key measures include sourcing responsibly and locally; seeking to conserve natural resources through the responsible use of energy, water and materials; monitoring and improving recycling; replacing single-use plastic straws with biodegradable alternatives; and the installation of electric vehicle charging points.
The hotel counts itself as incredibly fortunate to be situated in one of Ireland’s most treasured locations – a UNESCO World Biosphere – and has challenged itself to make a significant, positive and immediate change to how the business is run, while still maintaining the state-of-the-art facilities and level of service that it is renowned for.
