Your Guide to a Net Zero Home

Embarking on your Net Zero journey starts with smart, sustainable choices at home. Whether you start with one solution or combine several, each step helps reduce your carbon footprint and lower your energy bills. It also gives you greater control over how and when you use energy.

How Net Zero Products Work Together

A solar photovoltaic (PV) system generates clean electricity during the day, which can be stored in a home battery for use when the sun isn’t shining. This stored energy can then power your heat pump and electric vehicle (EV), reducing your reliance on the grid. Pairing these technologies with a smart Time of Use (ToU) tariff—like Electric Ireland’s Night Boost—lets you shift high-energy tasks like heating water or charging your EV to cheaper off-peak hours, further lowering your bills.

Together, these technologies create a smart, connected energy ecosystem. Solar panels reduce your daytime grid use and batteries store excess energy. Heat pumps provide efficient heating and cooling, while EV chargers keep your car running cleanly and affordably. Smart meter plans tie it all together, giving you personalised insights to help you optimise your energy use.

Smart Meter Plans to suit your lifestyle

Electric Ireland offers a range of smart meter plans to suit your lifestyle. Whether you prefer a simple 24-hour flat rate, a free electricity day each weekend, or the Night Boost plan with low rates from 2-4am. With any of our smart meter plans, you will access personalised electricity insights – showing you exactly how and where energy is being used in your home. Broken down by appliance and time of day, these insights help you make smarter choices, reduce your bills and your carbon footprint.

Solar PV

Solar panels are a smart way to cut your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint. By generating clean electricity from sunlight, they help you rely less on the grid and when paired with a battery, you can store that energy for use anytime. Plus, if you produce more than you use, you can earn 19.5cent per 1kWh (kilowatt hour) exported back to the grid through the Microgen tariff scheme. With low maintenance and long-term savings, solar panels are a powerful step toward a Net Zero home.

EV Home Charging

Charging an EV at home offers convenience, cost savings, and environmental benefits.  With an EV home charger, you can plug in overnight and wake up to a fully charged car- ready when you are. Home charging is typically cheaper than public charging stations and when paired with a smart electricity plan like Night Boost, you can take advantage of lower night-time rates, helping you save even more. It’s a simple way to reduce your running costs and enjoy the full benefits of driving electric.

Get an EV charger supplied and installed, for just €1,199 (including Sustainable Energy Authority or Ireland (SEAI) grant). Find out more at www.electricireland.ie/ev.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps offer an energy- efficient and eco-friendly way to heat and cool your home. By transferring heat instead of generating it, they provide three times more energy than they consume, leading to lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions. Paired with a Night Boost smart plan, you can take advantage of cheaper nighttime rates to run your heat pump. You will also be able  to monitor and optimise its performance, helping you save money and enjoy a cosy, comfortable home all year round.
