Sligo IT Looks to Future-proof Ireland’s Workforce

Sligo IT have taken the proactive step in creating a new engineering degree designed for the Datacentre industry in Ireland. The BEng in Data Centre Facilities Engineering is a two-year, online course that aims to provide the Datacentre industry with workers skilled in the technical management and operation of datacentres. Dublin now holds 25% of Europe’s market share of hosting facilities, making it the leading city in Europe when it comes to the Datacentre industry.

Nine of the top American ICT firms have a site in the City, including Amazon, Facebook and Google.   As of 2018, there are 46 datacentres operational in Ireland. There are an additional 28 in build or planning stage. It is estimated that Datacentres will account for 31% of the national energy demand by 2027.

Having identified a skill set shortfall in the Irish workforce, Sligo IT’s BEng in Data Centre Facilities Engineering has been developed in partnership with industry leaders including Google, Facebook and Microsoft. The course is aimed at upskilling employees in the Datacentres industry to take the step up to management and develop the in-depth skills necessary for the management of data centre facilities. The course can be completed online over two years, with all practical and lab classes taking place on the IT Sligo campus.
