For the attention of all electricity customers
Due to an over recovery of the PSO levy, all customers, regardless of the supplier will receive an automatic refund of approximately €2 during the period October 2015 to September 2016 (this equates to approximately 33 cents per 2-monthly bill).
What is the PSO?
The PSO (Public Service Obligation) is a levy on all customers by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) on behalf of the Government. It relates to a Government subsidy supporting renewable energy, indigenous fuels and security of supply. It appears on your bill as PSO levy (currently €10.72 per 2-monthly bill).
The CRU calculates the levy on an annual basis based on information from Suppliers and Generators and its own calculations.
Electric Ireland Over-Recovery
Electric Ireland asked the CRU to clarify the calculation of the PSO charge in relation to renewable energy. The CRU issued a clarification of the rules to all supply companies and it was identified that Electric Ireland has over-recovered €13m, including interest, related to the period 2008 to 2013.
The over-recovery over the last 5 year is approximately €2 per household.
How do I get a refund?
All customers, regardless of their supplier, will automatically receive a reduction of 33 cent per 2-monthly bill for the PSO charge during the period October 2015 to September 2016.
Might This Happen Again?
CRU have now clarified the relevant PSO rules and has communicated this to all suppliers. Electric Ireland welcomes this clarification. Electric Ireland’s submission for 2015/16 period is based on the clarified methodology as will all future submissions.
