There is a lot to do when moving house. Changing Bank Details, Billing Details, Transport details. The list goes on.
One of the more regular queries we get is how to close or change your Account. So, here's a handy step-by-step 'how to' guide to help you along the process.
Firstly, if the electricity or gas bill is in your name, don't forget it's really important to close your account to avoid being billed after you move.
To close your account, just take a meter reading on your last day. This will cover usage up to the point you leave.
Contact us with this and the name & number of your landlord or letting agency. These contact details are required to prevent vacant premises disconnection by ESB Networks/Gas Networks Ireland if there is a delay with anyone registering after you move out.
If you are not an online billing customer, provide us with your new address for forwarding your final bill based on this meter reading.
If you are too busy to contact us on the day you move, don't worry – you can contact us shortly after this date.
Things to Remember
You cannot transfer your account into the new tenant's name as they would be required to set up their own account
All you need to do is close your account, and bills after that point will not be anything for you to worry about. Customers are never held liable by us for bills that are not in their own name.
If you know the person who will be taking over the electricity/gas account, advise them to contact us to register an account in their name.
They will also need to provide a meter reading for billing from that point onwards, as well as the electricity MPRN (meter point reference number) or GPRN (gas).
