It’s often a bone of contention with flatmates when one person seems to spend ages in the shower and with the power shower being one of top 5 energy guzzlers in the home, it’s a fair point. So exactly how much does an average shower cost and how much can you save by being a little less generous with the soap?
According to a recent article in The Guardian, women spend more time on average in the shower, but only marginally with 25% of women spending 5 minutes or less in the shower, compared to 30% of males. The biggest difference in shower time comes with age. 18-24 year olds spend on average 13 minutes and 26 seconds in the shower, whereas the over 55s shower in 5 minutes or less. The difference in electricity cost between the two generations is approximately €81 per year.
In essence, by cutting your shower time by 5 minutes per day, you can save €49 per year (that’s enough for lunch for two including some vino). We’ll leave it up to you to have the conversation with your flatmate..
