Top 3 things you need to know about the NightSaver Meter

  1. The day/night meter unit rates with Electric Ireland are: 18.52 cent per unit (day), 9.15 cent per unit (night). VAT @13.5% included.

  2. The standing charge for a day/night meter is €218.23 per year (urban), €274.59 per year (rural), about €60 more than the average annual standing charge. VAT @ 13.5% included. You can see the full details on charges and unit rates here.

  3. In winter-time, customers on a NightSaver tariff can avail of cheaper (or "off peak") electricity from 11pm to 8am. In summer-time (right now – and up to when the clocks go back in late October) the night-rate hours are midnight until 9am. This time change happens automatically, however if you heat water during off-peak hours (e.g. in the case of dairy farmers and Gold Shield homes) you may need to adjust your own time-clocks that control your water heaters. Also remember you can benefit by using the tumble-dryer, washing-machine or dishwasher before 9am.

Is NightSaver for you?

  • As a rule of thumb, to make a saving with the day/night meter, roughly a quarter of your usage would need to be concentrated during the night-rate period - this would equate to around 3 units with average usage of 11 units per day (or 4,200kWh annually). What would use up 3 units?
