Seeking a penpal
Back in the early noughties Martin Leyden was actively seeking pen-pals from around the world. Martin enjoyed writing letters and so finding a pen-pal seemed natural to him. In early 2008, Martin received a surprise letter from a woman called Ansunelle, all the way from Pretoria South Africa. Naturally he replied but little did he know that this was the start of something special. As time passed the letters would come and go every 6 to 8 weeks. According to Martin this was “due to the fact that the South African post was as unpredictable as the Irish weather!”.
A flourishing relationship
After the fourth letter an informal invite came from Ansunelle to spend Christmas with her and her family in South Africa. So, in December 2008, Martin swapped his Christmas Turkey and Ham for a traditional South African Braai in sunny Pretoria. This visit was one of the best decisions Martin has ever made because last year he married his pen-pal, the love of his life in Ireland.
